November News
We are opening three new exhibitions on Saturday, 17th November at 4.30 pm in conjunction with our 30th anniversary celebrations. They are a combination of visual art, artefact and photographic exhibitions. These exhibitions see the diversity of the community come together to celebrate this momentous year.
This will be the ACCKP’s second New England Aboriginal acquisition award. The theme for the acquisition award is A Celebration of Heritage with over twenty Aboriginal artists taking part. The artists exhibiting are from Armidale, Tamworth, Walcha, Kempsey, Coffs Harbor, Lismore and Kuranda. The works will be judged on their creativity, authenticity and appropriateness of concept to the theme.
The second exhibition is of belly casts made by Aboriginal women of their pregnant bellies. The project was carried out through Karrali which is a program run by the Child and Family Health section of Hunter New England Local Health District. Karrali provides care during pre-birth, post-birth and throughout the early childhood years to all Aboriginal women and their families. This exhibition is a collaboration with Aboriginal women in the community who have engaged with Karrali over the years and celebrates these relationships. The displays add to the NAIDOC theme of Because of Her we can.
The third exhibition opening on the same evening is a photographic exhibition entitled Families of New England. It was curated by the ACCKP Aboriginal Women’s Group. This exhibition is made up of photos from the communities in the region and demonstrates a personal history of each family. The memories they hold may be small but they last a lifetime.
